What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a gentle but powerful Japanese therapy which uses joint mobilisation, stretches and pressure along energy channels and acupoints to rebalance the body and so allow it to heal itself.
  • It can be gentle or dynamic, depending on the client's needs.  All treatments are tailored to the individual client.
  • It feels great - deeply relaxing or energising - and is therefore good for relaxation or giving yourself a treat.
  • Regular Shiatsu is also good for health maintenance.
  • Being rooted in Traditional Oriental Medicine (like acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine) it is a powerful remedial therapy that can help with many physical, mental and emotional issues.
  • It is suitable for most people from young children to the frail and elderly, from the fit and healthy to those in pain or ill, and for both men and women, including during pregnancy.
Feel free to contact me to discuss your particular situation - I will recommend a different therapy, if more appropriate.

The treatment
Shiatsu always takes place fully-clothed, usually on a padded mat (futon) on the floor, but it can be done in a special massage chair, a normal chair, lying on a massage couch or adapted to any situation.  Loose clothing should be worn (not skirts or tight jeans) and clean socks brought.

Combination treatments
If appropriate, Shiatsu can be combined with Pelvic Correction, Cupping, Moxabustion or the application of compresses. I can also teach and recommend Qigong (Chi Gung) and other self-help exercises for clients to do themselves. (See separate pages about these techniques).
